About The Video

This is a great place to start to delve into Cecil Taylor's music because the camera work allows you to see the deliberate nature of his playing.

Hard to date this beautifully shot footage of him performing a solo piano piece in a video studio, but I’d place this around the early ‘70s.

You Can't Put Jazz In Your Little Box, It's To Big

Not looking at this like this is supposed to be jazz makes this music much easier to digest. In fact, since a lot of modern classical music has a lot of discontinuous melodies, I can appreciate what he is doing here a lot more. But try and call this jazz and it doesn't stand up to the likes of Bud Powell, Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum, Barry Harris, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, or the likes. When musicians started to stretch the limits of jazz music to this point it broke and became something else.

Like Bud powell, Errol Garner, Oscar Peterson and many other power-house pianists, Cecil actually"sings" the melodies he's hearing in his head as his improvs on the keys are developing. This is wonderful visual footage !!
